SPACESET 2004
18th Annual Space Settlement Design Competition For High School Students
presented by JPL Space Exploration Post 509

March 19-21, 2004

Spaceset 2004 is an industry simulation game that is set in the future. In the Spaceset scenario, the Foundation Society, a private organization that supports manned exploration and colonization of space, desires to construct a permanent manned settlement on the planet Mars. They need bright, hard-working young people who are willing to apply their talents to the design of this project.

Participants in Spaceset 2004 arrive at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) on March 19, 2004, and are transported forty-four years into the future for a weekend. During this stay in the future, participants will be assigned to one of several fictional 21st-century aerospace companies. Each company is responsible for all aspects of the design of their settlement - from the materials to be used for construction, to ongoing operational concerns, to effective use of automation and robotics. From the time students arrive Friday evening, the clock is ticking towards Sunday morning's presentation of their completed designs before a panel of judges, who are actual engineers and managers from the aerospace industry.

Students are not sent off to do their design work without assistance, however. Representatives from some of the leading current-day aerospace and engineering firms will first conduct training sessions in various aspects of engineering, and in corporate management. Throughout the weekend, technical experts will be traveling from company to company to answer any questions, and a library of reference materials will be available to all participants.

Students participating in Spaceset are free to bring their own reference materials and drafting tools if they wish. The most important asset they bring, however, is their creativity. Spaceset is designed to bring out each participant's creative talents, whether they be in the areas of freehand drawing, computer-aided design, abstract thinking, or problem resolution.

The cost schedule for the entire weekend event is as follows:

Early Registration - $90 – until December 1, 2003, 5:00 PM Pacific Time
Standard Registration - $110 – until Feb 2, 2004, 5:00 PM Pacific Time
Late Registration - $135 – until March 16, 2004, 5:00 PM Pacific Time

This fee includes meals, lodging, prizes, competition materials, and the use of computer and photocopying equipment during the weekend.

As of today, space is still available in the competition. If you wish to participate in Spaceset and already have a registration form, please fill it out and send it to the mailing address at the bottom of this page, in order to guarantee yourself a space in the competition. If you do not have a registration form yet, please read about How to Register for Spaceset.
